New Look for Spring at May Street Market with 16 Works of Art by Bette Cerf Hill

In a bold move to bring Spring indoors with color and form, chef/owner Alex Cheswick has installed a gallery of work by Chicago artist Bette Cerf Hill. In all a series of 16 paintings enliven the main dining room and lounge, highlighting three different concepts. In the lounge fiive portraits of Chicagoans reflects Hill's interest in local talent. She selected these notables as her subjects because of her respect for their creative work, and considers them all as multitalented "Renaissance people." Friends John Mahoney, Frank Galati and Joseph Shabalala all have connections to Steppenwolf, while Laurel Lipkin and Anne Ream are talented writers and activists who contirbute to the local and national scene.

In the main dining room, three large paintings of trees: Fall Woods 65"x 63", First Light 65"x 63", and Whose Woods 65"x 53", all painted in acrylic on canvas, and tie thematically to a series of very small works on paper from the Secret Garden Series. These mixed media studies on paper are segments of a holly hock that Hill drew, photographed and then colored by hand using paint, pastel and colored pencil. Hill, whose studio is also in West Town is pleased to be part of May Street Market's new look and neighborhood feeling.
